Merit Badges Prerequisites The following is a list of prerequisites or requirements that must be done prior to camp due to time constraints, people the Scout may need to contact, or facilities unavailable to our camp. There will be no exceptions to the prerequisites. Remember, the Buckeye Council and its staff do not write the merit badge requirements, and we will follow the requirements set forth by the National Scouting office. Most requirements are writing-intensive. Scouts should come prepared to camp with a notebook of some kind in order to effectively complete these requirements. It is strongly recommended that scouts read their merit badge books before coming to camp. The following requirements listed for each merit badge are accompanied by specific information indicating our requirements for how the prerequisite should be completed. There will be no exceptions to this policy. These requirements must be completed prior to coming to camp and turned in to the counselor no later than Monday’s merit badge class: Art: 4 — Note from the Scoutmaster Astronomy: 6, 7B — Bring finished sketches to camp. Be thorough! Use whatever means necessary to show your counselor what you did to complete the requirement(s). • “Bring to Camp” items are generally judged on the reasonability standard. For example, we don’t expect unwieldy items like multiple gallons of water to be brought to camp (as in the Emergency Preparedness prerequisites), but we do expect a quality effort on behalf of the Scouts. For example, for the home first aid kit required for First Aid merit badge, we do not require splints, breathing masks or other large expensive items, but we do expect more than band-aids and gauze. Again, be thorough! Go the extra mile. • A “Note from the Scoutmaster” is just that – a signed slip of paper indicating the specific requirements completed by the Scout before the start of camp. There will be no exceptions to the prerequisites! Special note for participants of the Leave No Trace program: prerequisites for Camping and Environmental Science merit badges must be completed in order to fulfill the requirements of the LNT Award. • Note: Be sure to check the newest requirements before beginning work on prerequisites. Ideally, Scouts should purchase Merit Badge books from their local council office long before summer camp in order to work on these requirements and to prepare for camp, as these books may not be available once Scouts have arrived on the reservation. • Note: In order to take waterfront merit badges, a Scout must pass the B.S.A. swimmer test at Sunday check-in. • Note: Be sure to read each requirement carefully to ensure that you are completing your pre-requisites before coming to camp. |
